Description
The first full account of the Irish dance phenomenon

“This accessible and lucid account... is a serious study which succeeds in being both entertaining and stimulating.” Irish News

“A lovely book, excellently researched and written with authority, yet managing to be entertaining and very readable.” Books Ireland

“A wealth of colourful anecdotes bring alive the surprisingly strong conflicts which arose in relation to dance – conflicts with puritanical church leaders, between native dancers and bureaucratic instructors, and over what constituted ‘real’ Irish dancing... Helen Brennan gives a lively and fascinating account of the many aspects of Irish dance today and in years gone by.” Ireland’s Own

“An authoritative study tracing the history of traditional dance in Ireland through medieval times to the big developments in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the great excitements of the past five years.” Ireland of the Welcomes

The Story of Irish Dance has a remarkable tone, conveying both intimacy and the edge of critique. This unusual amalgamation suits the muffled and unresolved eroticism of Irish dance... Most impressively, Brennan shows how the tradition has developed and changed, thereby ensuring its survival.” Irish Studies Review
