Description This rock 'n' roll Angela's Ashes begins in Wexford in the late 1950s and traces the impact on a young Kirwan of his republican grandfather, his mysterious, often absent deep-sea sailing father, and first bandleader Elvis Murphy. These influences propel him to the Dublin of the early 70's, where he fails to sign up for the revolution but succeeds in falling in love.
When the relationship ends he escapes to New York and the Bronx, where he finds himself side by side with the Ramones and Blondie at CBGB. He hangs out with the McCourts, Lester Bangs, and Nick Tosches at the Bells of Hell; he teams up with Pierce Turner and works with Cyndi Lauper. There are stories of Joe Strummer, Ric Ocasek, Neil Young, and Shane MacGowan, while the band he comes to front, Black 47 is being formed among the Guinness-soaked regulars of Paddy Reilly's.
“Kirwan's prose is often lively and always readable. He has wrought a refined tale of a raw existence, filled with colorful characters and vivid accounts.” Publishers Weekly
“Reader-friendly memoir by an author equally at home on the page and on the stage.”Kirkus Reviews |
